Supporting Southampton Households When It Matters Most

Supporting a Family Back on Their Feet Through the Household Support Fund

At Citizens Advice Southampton, we see first-hand how quickly unexpected costs can push families into crisis.

One local mum contacted us after facing a series of urgent housing issues in her privately rented home. She had to replace carpets and pay for pest control treatment, leaving her with very little money for essentials. Living in a one-bedroom property with her two children, the family were all sharing one double bed. They also didn’t have a washing machine or fridge. At the time, she was off work due to illness and relying on Universal Credit.

Through the Household Support Fund, we were able to provide immediate supermarket and energy vouchers, helping to ease the pressure around food and heating costs.

But we didn’t stop there.

We:

  • Requested white goods support, prioritising a washing machine
  • Shared details of the Southern Water Support Scheme, which may help with further essential appliances
  • Arranged a full furniture package, including separate beds and additional storage
  • Provided advice around landlord responsibilities and tenants’ rights

As a result, the family now have separate beds so everyone can sleep comfortably. Emergency food and energy needs have been met, and longer-term support is in progress. Most importantly, the client now feels confident about understanding her housing rights and knows she can return to us for further support.

Helping a Parent Secure Financial Stability

The cost of living continues to affect many families across Southampton. One parent came to us struggling to manage rising household costs while caring for a child with additional educational needs and disabilities.

Unable to work due to caring responsibilities, the parent was receiving Universal Credit but wasn’t aware of other benefits they might be entitled to.

Through the Household Support Fund, we provided supermarket and energy vouchers to ease immediate financial strain. Alongside this, our adviser identified that the child may be eligible for Disability Living Allowance (DLA).

A dedicated caseworker supported the parent through the DLA application process, ensuring all relevant evidence was included.

The outcome?

The family received urgent help with food and energy costs, and the DLA application has provided a pathway to increased household income and longer-term financial stability. Encouragingly, the family has not needed to apply for further Household Support Fund vouchers since.

From Crisis to Stability: Supporting a Vulnerable Client with Debt and Health Challenges

For clients living with multiple health conditions, managing finances can become overwhelming very quickly.

One Southampton resident contacted us after falling into significant debt, which had worsened due to ongoing health difficulties. The situation had reached crisis point.

Through the Household Support Fund, we provided emergency supermarket and energy vouchers, offering immediate breathing space.

At the same time, our team carried out a full debt assessment and referred the client to our specialist Money Advice Team. Urgent support was provided, including help dealing with bailiffs.

Recognising the wider impact of the client’s health on their financial situation, we also referred them for specialist support with a Personal Independence Payment (PIP) appeal at Tribunal.

This coordinated approach means the client now has both immediate relief and structured longer-term support in place – helping them move from crisis towards stability.

It’s a powerful example of how emergency funding, combined with holistic advice, can change lives.
