I’m worried about being able to afford food. What help is available?
If you’re finding it hard to afford food, you’re not alone. Many people struggle at times, especially when money is tight or bills are higher. We support lots of people in this situation, and help is available in Southampton.
Food banks in Southampton
Food banks can help if you don’t have enough money to buy food or if you need help in an emergency.
In Southampton, food banks are run by Southampton City Mission at different locations across the city.
You usually need a referral to use a food bank. This means a local organisation checks your situation and gives you a voucher so you can collect food.
You can get a referral from:
- Citizens Advice Southampton
- Your GP or another health professional
- Southampton City Council
- A support worker, school, or local charity
Your referral will tell you where to go and when to collect your food.
Monday: Above Bar Church 10 am – 3 pm
Tuesday: St Mary’s Sholing 10 am – 3 pm
Wednesday: The Old Chemist, Bitterne – 10 am – 3 pm
Thursday: Shirley Baptist Church – 10 am – 3 pm
Friday: Lord’s Hill Church – 10 am – 3 pm
Food banks usually distribute food between these times but may close earlier if they run out of food. Always call ahead or check with your referral agent first.
Community pantries and low-cost food
Southampton also has community pantries and low-cost food schemes. These can help if you’re on a low income.
A community pantry offering affordable fresh food and essentials where members pay a small fee and choose food they need. The Community Pantry at Round About Café is open Monday to Friday, 8 am – 2 pm and available to anyone with a Southampton (SO) postcode
You usually do not need a referral to use a pantry. Instead, you pay a small amount and receive food worth more than that.
Most pantries:
- Allow one shop per week and ask you to sign up before your first visit
