Are you interested in helping to run the Citizens Advice service in Southampton?

We are looking for enthusiastic people from all walks of life to come and join us as volunteer trustees to help lead our charity – all that is needed is a willingness to get involved, a commitment to social justice, and a small amount of time to commit regularly. We value both life and business experience from all sectors of the community, people who can consider the bigger picture and exercise good, independent judgement. Additional business experience is always welcome and we presently have skills gaps in marketing and buildings management.

Citizens Advice is a well-known and respected charity that provides information and advice to help people resolve their problems, including benefits, debt, employment, housing and so on. Here in Southampton we play a key role in the delivery of advice in the areas listed above as well as providing specialist debt and immigration advice, and working with Macmillan to deliver benefit advice to clients affected by cancer.

Our service is free, independent and impartial, with the aim of providing the advice that people need for the problems they face combined with canvassing to improve the policies and practices that affect people’s lives.

In 2018/19, Citizens Advice Southampton dealt with 22,569 problems resulting in income gained for clients of £2,582,333, all money that feeds back into the local economy. We have 65 volunteers helping to deliver the service and client feedback shows a 92% satisfaction rate with what we do.

As a member of the national Citizens Advice charity, we have access to the services, resources and support provided by the national body but as an independent charity, we’re responsible for running our own affairs within agreed standards. As a trustee, you will be joining the governing board of Citizens Advice Southampton.

You’ll need to:

  • be available to attend board meetings: these are held in the evenings, commencing at 5:30 and generally lasting 2-2.5 hours.
  • have a willingness to work as a team and participate in relevant work outside of meetings.
  • actively participate in discussions that relate to the running of the organisation.
  • act in the interests of Citizens Advice Southampton and that of its staff and clients.

We welcome applications from all sections of the community to help us achieve a diverse trustee board that reflects our clients and communities.

The post of trustee is a voluntary one but all reasonable expenses are reimbursed; the role provides a great deal of experience and satisfaction as well as the opportunity to develop your skills and utilise your expertise and knowledge.

For an application pack, or more information about the role, we would be pleased to hear from you and can be contacted on 023 8022 3659 or email: Liz Donegan, Chief Officer via
